Aromatherapy and Essential Oils

Therapists, physicians and other wellness professionals have long been using aromatherapy and essential oils either in medial treatment or to enhance therapy. In recent years, however, the use of therapeutic essential oils has taken hold in the private sector as well.

Though pure oils can easily be used safely by the average consumer, we recommend taking a moment to become familiar with standard practices. If you're buying aromatherapy pure essential oils for private use, take a few safety measures to get the most out of your experience and make the most of your oil.

Aromatherapy Pure Essential Oils Safety

Many consumers consider oil to be a fairly stable and long-lasting product; however, under less-than-ideal conditions, oils can break down and lose potency. It's for this reason that the safe use of aromatherapy pure essential oils begins with the storage of the oil. Keep any oil - including "carrier" oils (oil, such as jojoba, grapeseed oil that is mixed with essentials for aromatherapy) and essential oils - in a cool place, preferably one that is dry and shielded from direct light. The bottle in which the oil is stored should be sealed tightly with a regular lid - not a dropper lid - since some harsher oils can cause the dropper to break down over time. To keep your oil in top condition, store it in a container that is just big enough to contain the oil. This reduces the degree to which the oil makes contact with oxygen that can degrade the oil more quickly.

When mixing essential oils in carrier oils, follow the manufacturer's instructions. Every oil is different - some are thicker, more or less aromatic, more or less caustic, etc. - so use only what's recommended. Remember, less is more. If one drop works well, use one drop, not two. Finally, use caution when applying oils to the skin. If you have sensitive skin or have never used essential oils, mix a weaker blend initially and use on a small, test area first. If you experience no adverse reaction, use the weak solution and re-test a stronger blend on a small area of skin. With patience and practice, you'll find a potency that works best for your purposes.
